The Misa Hispana at Nativity parish continues to grow. The Spanish mass started in August of 2001 with approximately 60 people attending; currently it is common to see more than a 100 attendants. We have had one wedding, many baptisms, and one person currently going through RCIA training in Spanish. Fr. Gene Heerdink attends the Mass at least once a month to provide the sacrament of reconciliation in Spanish. In addition, Fr. Sy Loehrlein will be piloting a ‘confession guide’ to facilitate communication between the priest and the parishioner who is in need of immediate reconciliation. Fathers Endress, Loehrlein and Vogler continue to do a great job every Sunday. Nativity parish has given great support to the Hispanic community, both moral and financial. Fr. Henry Kuykendall continues to emphasize the need for activities that foster integration between the Hispanic and American communities. Nativity has transitioned to missals with sections in both English and Spanish driving the concept of unity between the two cultures. The Parish has also granted scholarships to two Hispanic children to attend Catholic school this year. As part of the integration effort and to honor our Lady of Guadalupe, a bilingual Mass was celebrated on December 15th at St. Benedict Church. Bishop Gettelfinger and Fr. Gene Heerdink preceded the mass. We look forward to continue with this type of efforts to help "connect" both cultures. Participation from the congregation in activities such as the choir, readings and children liturgy are steadily increasing. Still evolving, still growing, and still adapting under God’s guidance. With your help and support, we will continue the process of becoming "one" in Christ. And remember if you want to try something different, brush up on your Spanish skills, listen to music in a different language, join us at Nativity - Misa Hispana (Sundays at noon at Nativity Parish) everyone is "Bienvenido".
