Art

Although not the highest priority of the Church, the Church has a responsibility to promote art and beauty in our culture.

Good art should bring the observer into the reality of a spiritual event. It should draw us into the moment.  When we view the Crucifix of Our Lord, it should draw us closer into the reality of His suffering, and that suffering is a mysterious part of our salvation. When we see the statues of the Blessed Mother with the Child Jesus, it should bring us into the reality of Mary's joy of her part in bringing God's love into the world.

In earlier times when the people were not near as literate as now, the Church used stained glass and other works of art to tell the stories central to our beliefs.

Now the literacy rate is high, especially in southeast Evansville. Bibles and other Church documents are widely available. Art does not play the primary teaching role it once did.
